Hayward Area Memorial Hospital Employee Becomes President of Local Rotary
The Rotary Club of Hayward Area, a service organization composed of a broad cross-section of our local community, has announced that Lucy Malcolm, a physical therapist and long-time employee of Hayward Area Memorial Hospital, is the new Hayward Area Rotary Club president.
A Hayward resident for almost 27 years, Malcolm joined Rotary six years ago with the intent of getting more involved in the community. During her tenure, she has held a variety of positions including chair of Rotary’s presence at Musky Fest, the fall rose sale, Highway 63 clean-up, as well as co-chair of the candy sale. Fundraisers such as serving drinks at the Lumberjack World Championships Festival and Musky Fest, as well as the candy and rose sale, allow Rotary to financially support of a variety of programs in the community. For example, the Club awarded $5,000 in scholarships this year to graduating seniors from Hayward High School. Malcolm’s  goal for the year is to find a significant community project Rotarians can support.
Malcolm succeeds local veterinarian Edward Haugen as president. During his tenure as president, Haugen is credited with leadership of a variety of service projects that benefitted the greater Hayward community and beyond. Club members thank him for offering meeting alternatives such as Zoom during the pandemic so they could continue to meet.
Malcolm is joined in her role with the following officer and chair positions: Kelli Tuttle, vice president; Paul Wharton, sergeant at arms; Marnie Christensen, executive secretary; Ed Haugen, past president and membership chair as well as lead of the rose sale; Laura Urban, secretary and youth exchange counselor; Don Semler, Foundation chair; Kimberly Kayler, public relations chair; Mike Bratley, treasurer; Mark Witmer, community service chair; Kelli Tuttle, youth services chair and International secretary; and Jessica Wagner, vocational chair. Malcolm will continue to chair Musky Fest and Lumberjack World Championships activities, co-chair the candy sale as well as serve as the service projects chair.
The Rotary Club of Hayward Area meets two times per month (first and third Wednesday from noon-1 p.m.) as well as participates in a variety of local community events as volunteers.  In addition to the aforementioned service projects, the Club donates dictionaries to all third graders in Hayward, Minong, Birchwood and Winter schools. The Club is actively looking for new members. To learn more, visit www.haywardarearotary.org.
